Alma Sarabia Aquino

@ Intercultural Association of Home and Health Care Professionals

Alma Sarabia is a Mexican migrant with ten years of experience in the field of home and health care. Are home care workers only domestic workers or are they care professionals? Do irregular migrants have labour, legal and social rights? As a result of these concerns, a group of migrants started a “collective loom” from their experience and cultural identity, with the aim of “seeding equity-based projects”. “We are tired of others talking on our behalf about precariousness and labour exploitation. We are tired of witnessing discrimination. Tired as we were of being invisible, we created the Intercultural Association of Home and Health Care Professionals (AIPHYC in Spanish) Our aim: to be the drivers behind our demands to place value on care work, to deny that they are domestic workers, but rather professionals that, as such, deserve decent working conditions.
